The highly anticipated underwater survival sequel Subnautica 2 officially launched in Early Access on May 14, 2026, and its debut has already become one of the biggest gaming success stories of the year.

Over 2 Million Copies Sold in Just 12 Hours

Developer Unknown Worlds Entertainment confirmed that Subnautica 2 sold more than 2 million copies within only 12 hours after release. The game also reached over 650,000 concurrent players across PC and Xbox platforms, making it one of the largest launches in the survival genre.

Even before launch, the game had massive momentum thanks to millions of Steam wishlists and years of anticipation from fans of the original Subnautica.

Player Reactions Are Extremely Positive

Early player feedback has been overwhelmingly positive. On Steam, the game quickly achieved a “Very Positive” rating with tens of thousands of reviews praising:

- The atmosphere and underwater exploration
- Improved graphics powered by Unreal Engine 5
- Co-op multiplayer support for up to four players
- New creatures, environments, and survival mechanics

Many fans describe the sequel as larger, scarier, and more immersive than the original game.

One of the most praised additions is the new multiplayer co-op mode, allowing players to explore the alien ocean world together for the first time in the franchise’s history.

Some Players Still Report Technical Issues

Despite the strong reception, not everything has been perfect during launch week.
Some players reported:

- Missing quality-of-life features
- Performance issues on certain systems
- Motion sickness caused by the lack of FOV adjustment options

However, most reactions suggest these problems are relatively minor compared to the overall experience, especially considering the game launched in Early Access.

Why Subnautica 2 Is So Popular

The original Subnautica became famous for combining survival gameplay with psychological tension and deep ocean exploration. The sequel expands on that formula with:

- A completely new alien planet
- Dynamic ocean systems
- DNA modification mechanics
- Advanced AI creatures
- More detailed base building

The game also uses Unreal Engine 5 to create darker and more realistic underwater environments, making exploration feel both beautiful and terrifying at the same time.

A Huge Win for Unknown Worlds

Subnautica 2’s success is especially significant because the game experienced a difficult development period involving delays, legal disputes, and internal studio changes before launch.
Despite that, the final Early Access release has clearly connected with players worldwide.

If player interest remains this strong, Subnautica 2 could easily become one of the biggest survival games ever released.
